Odda the Elder

Odda the Elder is Ealdorman of Devon, a Saxon nobleman who throws his weight behind Alfred's cause against the Danish invaders. Gruff, pragmatic, and protective of his family's standing, he measures men by loyalty and usefulness rather than charm, and expects the same measure to be applied to him.

Simon Kunz plays him as the kind of solid, unglamorous ally every rebellion needs but rarely celebrates—a man of land and armies rather than speeches. Against the show's flashier warriors and kings, Odda's blunt calculation feels like a dose of realism, grounding Alfred's grand cause in the messier business of actually winning battles.
