Ochiba no Kata

Lady Ochiba is mother to the young heir and one of the most powerful women in Osaka, a noblewoman whose composure never quite hides the calculation underneath. She moves through council chambers full of men vying for power, allied for now with Lord Ishido, and watched closely by Toranaga, who knows her history and her mind.

The show could have made her a symbol; instead it gives her private, unreadable authority, and Nikaido plays that with stillness rather than speeches — a tilt of the head, a pause before answering, carrying decades of grief and grievance without ever naming them. You sense whole histories moving behind her eyes, which is exactly the point.
