Numbers Reader

Numbers Reader shows up in the margins of Futurama's world, a background voice doing exactly what the name promises: reciting figures with the flat, official cadence of someone who has done this job too many times to care what the numbers mean. He is a functionary, not a personality, and the show treats him that way.

The joke is entirely in the deadpan delivery. David Herman, who voices half of New New York's incidental population, gives this nothing role a specific, dry monotone that turns a filler bit into a small, precise piece of comic timing — proof that Futurama's background gags are as carefully built as its leads.
