Norma Jennings

Norma owns the Double R Diner, pouring coffee and pie with a warmth that makes it the town's true meeting place. She's married but tangled in a long, aching devotion to Big Ed Hurley, and she carries herself with a patient, worn kindness that suggests she's used to putting others first.

Peggy Lipton plays her without a trace of soap-opera excess, all quiet steadiness and tired grace. The show could easily reduce Norma to a waitress with a broken heart, but Lipton gives her dignity and interior life, making her longing feel real rather than decorative, and the diner feel like home.
