Character
Nikki Swango
Nikki Swango in Fargo (2014), played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
A parolee's girlfriend with a bridge habit and a plan, Nikki Swango meets the world as a sharp, hungry striver who has decided niceness never got anyone anything. She takes Ray Stussy at face value and loyalty seriously, and she is already scheming for something bigger than the two of them can currently afford.
Winstead plays her without a trace of the doormat she could have been on paper, all steel and dry wit under the leopard print. The show hands her a genre-scrambling arc that keeps escalating past what you'd expect, and she meets every turn with the same unblinking, competitive calm.
Nikki Swango (died March 2011) was a convicted criminal with a knack for competitive bridge from St. Cloud, Minnesota. She was the fiancée of her parole officer, Ray Stussy, who inadvertently drew her further into crime after he orchestrated the botched robbery of his wealthy brother Emmit.
