Nicholas "Nick" Miller

Nick tends bar in a loft full of roommates he half-manages and half-mooches off, a law school dropout who avoids adulthood with impressive dedication. He's grumpy, broke, and secretly soft, prone to rants about nothing and grand romantic gestures he'd never admit to planning. Jess's arrival throws his carefully avoided life into disarray.

Jake Johnson plays Nick's chaos as lived-in rather than cartoonish — the incoherent metaphors, the terrible ideas, the flashes of real tenderness underneath all feel like one person rather than a joke machine. The show trusts him with both slapstick and heartbreak, and he earns the swing between them without ever losing the guy's essential shagginess.
