Nicholas Higgins

Nicholas Higgins is a Milton mill hand and outspoken union man, weathered by factory work and hard opinions alike. He speaks his mind to masters and strangers without flinching, fiercely protective of his daughters, and increasingly drawn into organizing his fellow workers against the mill owners' demands.

Brendan Coyle gives Higgins a rough, unshowy dignity that refuses easy categorizing as either hero or troublemaker. The writing lets him argue his case in full, plainly and without condescension, so his clashes with Margaret and Thornton become genuine debates about fairness rather than simple class theatre. He grounds the whole industrial plot in one stubborn, human face.
