Narrator & Bagpuss

Bagpuss is a saggy, baggy, pink-and-white cloth cat who sits perfectly still in the window of Emily's shop, waiting. When she brings in some found thing and wishes, he yawns awake, and so does everyone else — the mice, Gabriel the toad, Professor Yaffle — ready to make sense of whatever oddity has arrived. The narrator, gentle and unhurried, tells us this each time as if for the first time.

Oliver Postgate voices both roles, and the trick is in the pacing: that slow, sleepy narration turning ordinary jumble into something worth waking up for. Bagpuss himself does almost nothing — he stretches, he listens, he falls back asleep — yet the show builds its whole tender, unhurried world around his waking, which is why it has stayed so loved for so long.
