Murray Goldberg

Murray Goldberg is the gruff, couch-bound patriarch of an overbearing 1980s Pennsylvania household, running a furniture store by day and grumbling through family chaos by night. He barks 'idiots' at his kids with weary affection, wants nothing more than to be left alone with the TV, and loves fiercely under a mountain of complaints.

Garlin builds comedy out of pure exhaustion, turning Murray's catchphrase grumbling into something oddly tender rather than mean. The show lets him be a lump on the couch and still the emotional anchor of the family, and Garlin's timing—especially the slow-burn softening beneath the growling—makes his rare moments of sincerity land twice as hard.
