Murray Bauman

Murray Bauman turns up as a jittery, wildly conspiratorial private investigator hired to trail an unfaithful spouse, and instead stumbles onto something far stranger. He's suspicious of everyone, allergic to easy explanations, and insists — loudly, at length — that the truth is always uglier and more complicated than people want to admit.

Gelman plays paranoia as comedy without ever making Murray a fool: he's usually right, which is the joke and the point. The writing lets him be abrasive, self-satisfied, and genuinely brilliant in the same breath, and he becomes the one adult in the room willing to say the absurd thing out loud.
