Mr. Mackay

Mr. Mackay is the senior prison officer at Slade Prison, a stickler for rules who patrols the wings barking orders in a clipped Scottish rasp. He prides himself on discipline and order, treats every inmate as a potential troublemaker, and regards Norman Stanley Fletcher in particular as a lifelong adversary to be outmanoeuvred.

Fulton Mackay plays the martinet without ever letting him become a cartoon: the bluster masks real pride and a nagging suspicion that he's always one step behind Fletcher. The scripts hand him wonderful, clenched dialogue, and Mackay's comic timing turns rigid authority into something both funny and oddly sympathetic.
