Mr. Darcy

Mr. Darcy arrives in Meryton as a wealthy, reserved gentleman whose stiff manners at the local assembly mark him instantly as proud and disagreeable. He dances little, talks less, and seems to hold the country company beneath him. Beneath the coldness, though, is a man uneasy in rooms full of strangers, watching more than he speaks.

The trick of Darcy is that first impressions are meant to be wrong, and the character only works if the actor can be genuinely off-putting before he's allowed to be admirable. Jack Lowden brings a coiled, watchful stillness to the early scenes — haughtiness that reads, on a second look, like discomfort — so the eventual thaw feels earned rather than scripted.
