Morty Smith

Morty is a fourteen-year-old kid with crippling anxiety and a stutter, dragged out of his ordinary suburban life by his grandfather Rick into interdimensional chaos he never asked for. He wants normalcy, a girlfriend, maybe just to survive gym class, but instead spends his time vomiting through portals and getting used as leverage in cosmic schemes.

The stammering, panicked delivery Roiland gives him makes Morty's terror feel real even when the universe he's reacting to is absurd. He's the show's moral gravity: capable of naive decency amid Rick's nihilism, and watching that decency get worn down episode by episode is where the series finds its actual stakes.
