Mildred Gunning

Mildred Gunning is an elderly, sight-impaired woman living on Crockett Island under the care of her daughter, Dr. Sarah Gunning. Frail and fading, she spends her days at home, tended to with quiet, exhausted devotion. She says little, but her presence anchors her daughter's daily life and worry.

Alex Essoe plays Mildred with a stillness that makes small moments — a hand reaching for a cup, a half-formed sentence — feel weighty. The show uses her fragility as an emotional barometer for the island's unease, and Essoe never oversells it, letting quiet vulnerability do the work instead of dialogue.
