The Midwife shows up for exactly one job: delivering a baby somewhere in the chaos of the twenty-first century's future. Brisk, businesslike, and utterly unbothered by whatever weirdness is unfolding around the delivery, she treats the moment with the flat professional calm of someone who has clearly seen much stranger deliveries than this.

It's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it role, but Maurice LaMarche's gift for turning a single scene into a fully inhabited character does the work. He gives her a clipped, no-nonsense cadence that lands as funny precisely because she refuses to acknowledge the absurdity around her — a small, efficient joke in a show built on background gags.
