Michael is Jane's boyfriend of two years, a young detective who has waited patiently through her vow of celibacy and is finally ready to propose. He's earnest, a little dorky, fiercely devoted, and treats Jane's plans and boundaries as sacred rather than an obstacle to route around.

Brett Dier plays devotion without making it dull, finding real comic timing in Michael's eagerness and vulnerability. The show could easily have written him as the safe, boring option, but his sincerity and his flustered reactions to Jane's increasingly telenovela-shaped life give him genuine warmth and staying power.
