Mia Warren arrives in Shaker Heights the way she's arrived everywhere else: with her teenage daughter Pearl, a car full of belongings, and no plans to stay long. She works as an artist and takes odd jobs to get by, guarded and self-contained, renting a duplex from the meticulous Elena Richardson and keeping her past carefully unexamined.

Kerry Washington plays Mia's watchfulness as strength rather than mystery, so every deflection feels earned instead of coy. The scripts set her rootless, improvisational life against Elena's rule-bound one without ever flattening either woman into a lesson, and Washington's stillness makes Mia magnetic precisely because she gives so little away.
