Meryl Stryfe is an insurance investigator for the Bernardelli Company, sent to track down Vash the Stampede — the outlaw blamed for a city's worth of destruction — before he can cause more. She's sharp, procedural, and utterly unimpressed by legend, expecting a monster and finding an idiot in a red coat instead.

She's the audience's skepticism given a badge and a clipboard, and that grounding is what lets Trigun's tonal whiplash work at all. Hiromi Tsuru plays her exasperation as genuine rather than comic relief, so when Meryl's professionalism starts cracking under what she actually witnesses, the show's stakes crack open with her.
