Merlin

Merlin holds court in the antechamber of Knightmare, a rambling old wizard in flowing robes who greets each new dungeoneer with theatrical fuss and half-remembered wisdom. He dispenses cryptic advice, forgets his own instructions mid-sentence, and seems constantly on the verge of some greater revelation he can never quite finish delivering.

John Woodnutt plays him with a doddery, distracted grandeur that never tips into parody, so children believe in him even as adults smile at the joke. The scripts let him be genuinely unreliable — advice that half-helps, half-hinders — which makes him funnier and stranger than a straightforward wise mentor would be.
