Character
Mel Sattem
Mel Sattem in Ozark (2017), played by Adam Rothenberg.
Mel Sattem is a rumpled, semi-disgraced private investigator hired to track down a missing man connected to the Byrde family. He drinks too much, talks too much, and seems like a joke at first — but he is dogged, noticing loose threads everyone else has learned to ignore, and he refuses to let the case go quiet.
He's the audience surrogate dropped into a world that has grown numb to its own horror, and Adam Rothenberg plays him with a scruffy, unglamorous persistence that cuts through four seasons of tightly controlled menace. His comic-relief exterior hides real tenacity, and watching him slowly assemble what the Byrdes have spent years hiding is genuinely tense.
Melvin Sattem is a major antagonist in Season 4 of Ozark, serving as a supporting antagonist in the first half and the secondary antagonist of the second half. He is a private investigator, a former homicide detective in Chicago, and a recovering drug addict and alcoholic.
