McWatt

McWatt is a bomber pilot in Yossarian's squadron, one of the few men who seems to be having fun in the middle of the war. He flies low over the beach to buzz the men swimming below, laughs easily, and treats the whole insane machinery of the war as something closer to a game than a threat.

Jon Rudnitsky plays him with a breezy, boyish charm that makes him the squadron's sunniest presence, a deliberate contrast to Yossarian's mounting dread. That cheerfulness is the point: Catch-22 uses McWatt's lightness to show how thin the line is between play and catastrophe, and how little control anyone actually has.
