Maxine

Maxine is throwing the party — her own birthday, in her own apartment — and she is having a wonderful time. Flamboyant, warm, a little stoned, she keeps trying to fold Nadia back into the celebration with an affectionate, slightly overbearing hostess energy, calling her "little baby" and refusing to let the night end.

Greta Lee turns what could be a one-note comic bit — the oblivious friend who keeps reappearing in the same doorway saying the same thing — into something genuinely funny and, eventually, weirdly touching, purely through commitment to Maxine's specific rhythms: the drawl, the endearments, the total confidence that everyone around her is fine.
