Mathilde

Mathilde serves as Catherine de Medici's closest attendant, the one person who moves through the French court at her side without ever being seen as a threat. She is practical, quick-witted, and unsentimental, handling secrets and small cruelties alike with the same dry composure, always watching the room Catherine cannot watch alone.

The show could easily have made her a decorative sidekick, but Kiruna Stamell plays Mathilde as someone with her own clear-eyed read on power — amused by it, wary of it, never fooled by it. Her scenes with Catherine crackle with an intimacy built on honesty rather than deference, which makes her one of the few people in this court who feels entirely trustworthy.
