Mateo is the baby at the very center of the story before he can do or want anything for himself — the accidental result of a mix-up that turns his mother Jane's carefully planned life upside down. He arrives as an infant, the living consequence around whom every adult must reorganize.

A newborn can't carry a plot on charm or dialogue, so the show leans on what he represents: the impossible tangle of love, timing, and family that Jane, Rafael, Michael, and Xiomara have to sort out because of him. He works less as a performance than as a constant, quiet stake.
