Mashima, Taichi

Taichi Mashima is the smart, composed one — top of his class, quietly used to being first at everything. He treats karuta as a game beneath him until his childhood friend Chihaya drags him back into it, and his easy confidence starts running up against how much winning, and being noticed, actually matters to him.

The show is generous with Taichi's vanity without ever letting it curdle into villainy; his competitiveness is treated as a real flaw worth examining rather than a quirk. Mamoru Miyano plays the gap between Taichi's polished exterior and his prickly insecurity with real precision, making his growth feel earned rather than scheduled.
