Mary Louise arrives in Monterey trailing grief and unanswered questions after her son Perry's death, inserting herself into Celeste's household to help with her grandsons. Soft-spoken and old-fashioned in manner, she asks pointed questions with a smile, probing at the story everyone has agreed to tell about how Perry died.

Streep plays her with a strange, halting cadence and a birdlike stillness that make ordinary sentences feel like accusations. The writing gives her plausible deniability for every cruelty — she's just a grieving mother, isn't she — and Streep uses that cover to turn passive aggression into something genuinely unsettling and, at moments, darkly funny.
