Mary Hawkins

Mary Hawkins is a shy, sheltered young Englishwoman navigating the glittering, treacherous salons of Paris society. Barely out of the schoolroom, she stammers through introductions, blushes at scandal, and clings to propriety. Claire Fraser takes a protective interest in her, sensing beneath the timidity a gentle, earnest girl unprepared for the world she's been thrust into.

Rosie Day plays naivety without making it grating, giving Mary a stammer and downcast eyes that read as genuine fear rather than a writer's shorthand for innocence. The character works as a mirror for Paris itself—a delicate thing surrounded by predators—and Day lets you see the courage underneath the flinching long before the plot asks her to use it.
