Alice Englert plays Mary's loyalty as something almost physical, a stubbornness that reads as strength until you notice how much it costs her to maintain it. The writing lets her contradictions sit uncomfortably rather than resolving them, and Englert's raw, unguarded performance makes her denial feel less like naivety than survival.
