Marty Byrde

Marty Byrde is a Chicago financial advisor, calm and precise, whose quiet family life turns out to rest on laundering money for a Mexican cartel. When a scheme goes wrong, he relocates his wife and two kids to the Missouri Ozarks with a hasty plan to make good on an enormous debt. He talks his way through disasters in the same flat, reasonable tone he'd use to pitch a mutual fund.

Bateman built a career on being the exasperated normal guy in a room full of lunatics, and the show weaponizes that persona: Marty's unflappable, dad-joke calm becomes genuinely unsettling once you realize how much violence and calculation it's covering for. Watching him negotiate his family's survival with spreadsheet logic and a poker face is the whole dark comedy of the thing.
