Character
Martha Hanson
Martha Hanson in The Americans (2013), played by Alison Wright.
Martha Hanson is a secretary in the FBI's counterintelligence office, plain-spoken, dutiful, and quietly starved for attention after years of being overlooked. When a shy, courtly man named Clark starts paying her the kind of notice no one else has, she leans into it fully, hopeful and a little disbelieving of her own luck.
Alison Wright plays loneliness without asking for pity, which makes it land harder. The show could easily reduce Martha to a plot device, a way into the Bureau, but the writing keeps insisting on her interior life: her hunger for romance, her competence at work, her dignity. Wright finds the ache under every hopeful smile.
In love with Clark, she agreed to plant a bug in Frank's office, which was ultimately discovered. As an investigation ensued, Philip killed and falsely implicated the office technology specialist, in order to protect her. After Stan uncovered Martha's life with Clark Westerfeld, Philip forced the KGB to exfiltrate her to the Soviet Union.
