Marie Adler

Marie Adler is eighteen, living in a group home for kids aging out of foster care, when she wakes up to find a masked man in her apartment and reports that she has been raped. She answers detectives' questions haltingly, flatly, her face giving away little — and that stillness becomes, to the people around her, a reason for doubt.

Kaitlyn Dever plays Marie almost entirely through withholding — a flinch suppressed, a detail repeated too evenly — so the audience feels the unfairness of being read as suspicious for surviving trauma the 'wrong' way. The show refuses to let her perform grief for anyone's comfort, and Dever makes that refusal devastating rather than cold.
