Marcus Junius Brutus

Brutus is a senator caught between loyalty and principle from the moment we meet him, a man of philosophy and conscience who genuinely loves Caesar even as the Republic he believes in comes apart around them. Careful, earnest, and easily swayed by better rhetoricians than himself, he wants to do right by Rome and by the people he cares for, though he isn't always sure how.

Menzies plays him as tender and porous rather than noble-marble, a decent man who can be talked into anything by someone more certain than he is. The show doesn't flatter Brutus into a tragic hero; it shows the anxious, overthinking mind underneath the famous name, which makes his every scene with Caesar quietly unbearable to watch.
