Marcello

Marcello is an old Italian civilian who has watched wars pass through his corner of the world and outlasted most of the men who fought them. Amid the young American airmen stationed nearby, he moves with a shrug of long experience, offering little sympathy for their panic and even less faith in the causes they're dying for.

Giannini plays him as the show's quiet counterweight — someone who has seen enough occupations to find the Americans' terror almost naive. Against Yossarian's spiraling dread, Marcello's weariness lands as dry, lived-in wisdom rather than cynicism for its own sake, and Giannini gives it the unhurried authority of a man who simply knows better.
