Malfunctioning Eddie

Malfunctioning Eddie in Futurama (1999), played by David Herman.

Malfunctioning Eddie runs with the Robot Mafia under Donbot, a lower-tier muscle-bot whose circuits are just a little off. He talks tough, follows orders, and tries to pull his weight alongside Clamps, but his glitchy wiring keeps undercutting the menace he's going for.

The joke is built into his name and never oversold: a mobster who occasionally short-circuits mid-threat. David Herman plays him utterly straight, which makes the malfunctions funnier, and Futurama's gift for background gags means Eddie never needs a spotlight to be worth catching.

Malfunctioning Eddie is an unstable robot who owns Malfunctioning Eddie's Rocket-Car Emporium. He has a problem with his head exploding when he gets surprised and he was sent to the Hal Institute for Criminally Insane Robots for this reason. While in the institute, he was Philip J. Fry's roommate and contributed to Fry's developing madness because of his exploding problem.
