Mako Mankanshoku

Ryuko's best friend at Honnouji Academy is loud, broke, and utterly unbothered by the school's fascist uniform hierarchy. Mako is a Two-Star nobody from a scrappy household who latches onto Ryuko with total devotion, offering snacks, unsolicited pep talks, and gymnastic bursts of enthusiasm that seem to run on a different logic than everyone else's.

Aya Suzaki throws her voice into every register at once, and the show lets Mako's manic, rubber-limbed monologues become genuine moments of clarity amid the power fantasy and body horror around her. She's comic relief with real backbone underneath — her loyalty to Ryuko never wavers, and the anime never once resolves that Mako's own kind of strength is any less serious than a Kamui's.
