Maggie Lauten

Maggie Lauten arrives at Hillman College as one of the few white students on a historically Black campus, eager to fit in and be liked. She's chatty, well-meaning, a little oblivious to how her presence reads to the friends around her, and determined to prove she belongs by sheer friendliness.

The show uses Maggie to test its own premise without turning her into a lesson: Marisa Tomei plays her naivety as genuine warmth rather than cluelessness for laughs, so her missteps land as recognizably human. She's an early example of the series using comedy to talk about race without flattening anyone into a punchline.
