Character
Maes Hughes
Maes Hughes in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009), played by Keiji Fujiwara.
Maes Hughes is a lieutenant colonel in the military, a devoted family man, and Edward Elric's dependable ally with a knack for turning up exactly when he's needed. He's endlessly proud of his wife and daughter, showing off photos to anyone in earshot, and behind the goofiness he's sharp, thorough, and quietly essential to the investigations unfolding around him.
The show leans hard into his running gag—phone calls hijacked by baby pictures, colleagues fleeing his enthusiasm—so completely that you stop expecting anything else from him, which is exactly the point. Fujiwara plays the warmth as wholly genuine rather than comic exaggeration, so Hughes reads as a real person whose happiness makes him instantly, disarmingly likable.
Maes Hughes was an Amestrian State Military officer stationed in the Investigations Office in Central City. He was Roy Mustang's best friend, as well as the closest supporter of Mustang's secret bid for the position of Führer. A devoted family man and exemplary soldier, Hughes was generally well-liked by the other characters (unless he was pushing his overwhelming love of his wife or daughter on them).
