Mae

Mae turns up in the psychiatric ward where Josh's mother Rose is staying, one of the quietly odd, watchful faces in the corridors and common rooms. She speaks in a flat, matter-of-fact way about things other people would flinch from, and seems entirely unbothered by how strange that makes her seem to visitors.

Renee Lim plays her with a stillness that refuses to beg for either pity or laughs, which is exactly what the show's mix of comedy and mental illness needs. Mae never explains herself, and the writing trusts that restraint completely, letting her dry, unhurried presence undercut every scene's easy emotional cues.
