Identified only by a serial number rather than a name, M-5438 is one of Futurama's many anonymous robots — a background presence in a world where machines are as common and as put-upon as people, going about whatever narrow function the plot assigns without complaint or ceremony.

The joke of a robot with a number instead of a name is very Futurama: even the throwaway characters get a bureaucratic designation, as if the future has more personhood to process than names to spare. Billy West's ability to make even a nameless bit part sound fully inhabited is what sells it.
