Lyla Garrity is Dillon's picture of golden-girl perfection: head cheerleader, devout, and girlfriend to star quarterback Jason Street. She glides through hallways with practiced poise, invested in appearances and in being seen as good. Underneath the smile is a girl who has never had to test what she actually believes, about faith, love, or herself.

The show could have left Lyla as scenery — the pretty girlfriend on the sideline — but it keeps peeling back her composure to find someone genuinely working out who she wants to be. Minka Kelly plays that unraveling and rebuilding with real control, letting Lyla's brittleness and her decency coexist without ever making her a joke.
