Character
Luther Hargreeves
Luther Hargreeves in The Umbrella Academy (2019), played by Tom Hopper.
Number One, and the one who still believes in the mission. Massive and awkward in equal measure, Luther has spent years stationed on the moon at his father's command, waiting for orders that never quite justify the sacrifice. When the family reunites, he clings hardest to the old hierarchy, desperate for it all to have meant something.
Tom Hopper plays a super-strong bruiser as someone fundamentally lonely and a little ridiculous, which is funnier and sadder than brute strength alone would be. Luther's loyalty to a father who barely deserved it gives the show its saddest joke: the strongest Hargreeves is also the most easily controlled.
Spaceboy (originally Number One, legally Luther Hargreeves) is the sensitive and dedicated leader of the Umbrella Academy, and one of the simultaneously born superpowered children. He was born with extraordinary physical strength, which was later enhanced when he became surgically fused with the body of a Martian simian.
