Lorraine Lyon

Lorraine Lyon runs the family's mortuary-and-loan empire in 1950s Kansas City with a calculator where her heart should be. Widowed and unbothered by it, she treats grief, debt, and family alike as line items to be managed. Icy, exacting, and utterly unsentimental, she wants order, profit, and obedience, in that sequence.

Jennifer Jason Leigh plays her without a flicker of warmth, which is the joke and the menace at once — she delivers monstrous pronouncements about money and mortality in the same flat, reasonable tone. The writing hands her some of the show's driest lines, and Leigh's total commitment to Lorraine's logic makes her hilarious and genuinely frightening in the same breath.
