Character

Lord Mountbatten

Lord Mountbatten in The Crown (2016), played by Charles Dance and Greg Wise.

Louis Mountbatten is the family's grandest elder statesman — war hero, last Viceroy of India, uncle to Philip and eventual mentor to Charles. He arrives already certain of his own importance, full of advice nobody quite asked for, needling at the throne's edges with charm, ambition, and a very long memory.

The show uses him as the voice of naked ambition inside a family built on restraint, and both actors lean into that contrast — Greg Wise's brisk vanity, Charles Dance's weathered, watchful pride. He's never simply likeable, but he's never boring either, a man who treats royal duty as a game he intends to win.

Lord Montbatten is a member of the Royal Family. He is the great uncle to Prince Charles. He had engineered a marriage of Camilla Parker-Bowels with her husband, not Prince Charles, despite knowing Charles and Camilla loving each other. One day, he called Prince Charles, after going through several extensions. They have a brief conversation about his relationship.
