Lord Melbourne

William Lamb, Lord Melbourne, is the Prime Minister who greets the eighteen-year-old Victoria on her accession and quickly becomes her closest advisor. Urbane, dryly funny, and world-weary, he guides her through court intrigue and the mechanics of rule, treating her with a courtly gentleness that borders on genuine tenderness beneath the polish.

Sewell plays Melbourne as a man performing ease while carrying real melancholy underneath it, and the show lets that tension do the work rather than spelling it out. His scenes with the young queen crackle because he never condescends to her inexperience — he's charmed by it, which makes his restraint feel like the most interesting thing about him.
