Tony's mother lives alone in a suburban house she insists is too much for her, though she refuses to move into the retirement community her son has picked out. She complains constantly, twists small grievances into wounds, and greets every kindness with suspicion or a sigh about how hard her life has been.

Marchand plays her not as a cartoon nag but as someone genuinely, bottomlessly unhappy, which makes her manipulations land like weather rather than performance. The show lets her self-pity sit uncomfortably close to real pathos, and Tony's exhausted devotion to her tells you more about him than any monologue could.
