Lionel Brown

Lionel Brown runs Brown's Town, a rough backcountry settlement in colonial North Carolina, with the puffed-up authority of a man who mistakes cruelty for order. He postures as a reasonable neighbor to the Frasers while presiding over a community built on fear, grudges, and quick violence, all delivered with a preacher's certainty that he's in the right.

Ned Dennehy plays him without a trace of cartoon villainy, which is what makes him unsettling: the self-satisfaction, the wounded pride, the way menace slides out from under ordinary neighborliness. Outlander gives him just enough petty grievance to feel plausible, and Dennehy finds the small, human ugliness underneath the frontier bluster.
