Light Yagami

Light Yagami is a top student in Tokyo, brilliant, restless, and quietly contemptuous of a world he finds rotten with injustice. When a notebook capable of killing anyone whose name is written in it falls into his hands, he decides, almost immediately, to use it to remake society according to his own idea of justice.

The show gives him an argument, not just a scheme, and lets you watch a reasonable-sounding premise curdle into something monstrous without ever softening him into a simple villain. Mamoru Miyano plays the calm, dutiful son and the messianic killer as the same unbroken voice, which is exactly what makes him so unsettling to watch.
