Character

Leticia "Lettie" Bostic

Leticia "Lettie" Bostic in A Different World (1987), played by Mary Alice.

Lettie Bostic runs the kitchen at Hillman College's dormitory, and everyone who passes through it answers to her. She feeds the students, minds their business whether they like it or not, and hands out plain-spoken wisdom along with the food, treating the young women in her care like family she never asked for but keeps anyway.

Mary Alice gives Lettie a stillness that commands a room without raising her voice, so when she does deliver a verdict on some student's foolishness it lands like scripture. The show trusts her as its moral center, an adult who has seen enough of life to cut through campus drama with a single flat sentence.

Leticia "Lettie" Bostic (played by Mary Alice) enrolled at Hillman College, dropped out of Hillman a few credits short of her degree, moved to Paris, met Pablo Picasso, spied for the Allies during World War II, rejected marriage proposal from South African freedom fighter Marcus Mpepo, replaced Stevie Rallen as dorm director of Gilbert Hall.
