Lester Nygaard

Lester Nygaard is a Bemidji insurance salesman who has spent his whole life being stepped on — by his wife, his brother, and the bully who's tormented him since high school. Meek, stammering, and eager to please, he seems like the last man in town capable of causing trouble, until a stranger offers him a way to stop being pushed around.

Freeman plays Lester's transformation as something almost imperceptible at first — a straightened collar, a steadier voice — so that his slide from doormat to something far more dangerous never feels like a costume change but a slow reveal of what was always underneath the apology.
