Leland Palmer

Laura's father is a Twin Peaks lawyer whose grief, when the news of his daughter's death arrives, erupts into something almost too large for a living room — dancing with her photograph, sobbing on the floor. He's a pillar of the town, well-liked, outwardly ordinary, and utterly undone.

Ray Wise plays devastation without a safety net, swinging from courtly warmth to raw, embarrassing anguish in the same scene, and the show trusts him to go further than television grief usually allows. That excess is unsettling before you know why, which is exactly the point — he's the first sign that Twin Peaks' surface can't hold.
